John was awakened by the rapping on his door. He looked
at the clock and it was 7:00 o’clock. He got out of bed, put on his robe, and
went to open the door. It was the custodian of the apartment building. He
wanted to get busy and put the tables out on the lawn. John says he will call
his nephew Ben to come over. He doesn’t live too far away.
With the maintenance man, custodian, John and his nephew
they would have enough help getting tables set up. They soon had the tables out
on the grass. John’s leg was beginning to bother him.
Catherine and Lois came at 8 o’clock. They were having
their tables set up in the club house. The weather looked like it would be a
nice sun shiny day.
“ Temps in the low 70’s let’s
put the table cloths on the tables. The teen agers can decorate with the
balloons.” Catherine stated.
The custodian and maintenance
man brought potted plants to put by the club house and on the edge of the
patio. Things were shaping up nicely.
Dick came to see that his grill got set up and that they
worked. They were having trouble with the third grill. We finally came to the
conclusion that it needed a new tank of gas. Dick had to do a lot of brushing
on the grills. Who ever used them didn’t clean them very well.
The teen agers came at 9:30. They were happy to see
decorate with the balloons. There were a few children here already and they
were going to throw the Frisbee.
Some of the adult residents were early and wanted their
flu shots and blood pressure reading early. They wanted to beat the crowd.
Catherine didn’t have a problem with that. She had a lady that felt light
headed as she had her sit to the side till she felt better. One young man had
extreme high blood pressure. He told her that it’s been extremely high for the
past three years; he also said he takes medicine.
Dick had started to put hamburgers, brats, and wieners on
the grill. He didn’t like rushing the meat. He did it slow with the CD player
going, with the big band music turned down low. The boys were throwing stones
and sticks at the ducks in the pond. There were six girls that were dancing to
the music of the Les Brown and his band of renounce Grandma and Grandpa must
have had something to do with that.
The tables were starting to fill up with people. The main
table was filled with food, which they had brought. Some of the residents had
their dish in a bowl of ice. They couldn’t be too careful about food spoiling.
When everyone has eaten they will take the remaining food back to their
apartments.
Catherine and Lois had attended to 43 people. They had
enough serum for seven more people. They were pleased with themselves.
Residents were happy that they didn’t have to go to the doctor as well. Now we
can get to the games and some serious dancing. The people needed to burn off some
of their dinner. There were some brats and wieners left, now anyone could have
them to take home.
The Frisbee
contest was a huge success, with 3 winners, two boys and one girl. The prizes
were white elephants from the residents. One of the prizes was a stuffed
elephant. The volley ball games were close. It was the boys against the girls.
Its good that the girls could hold there own. The girls won the contest by two
points. The horse shoe tournament didn’t go too good. Most of the men couldn’t
throw the shoe far enough. The younger men never played it before. It’s a dying
art.
The dancing was a huge success as well. Some of the older
couples can still get out there and dance. John was debating weather he wanted
to call Catherine. It’s been two and a half weeks since the cook out party. He
liked her but didn’t know how much. He decided to call and ask her if she
wanted to go out for tea at the coffee and tea house on Saturday. She said it
sounded good to her.
On Saturday they met and had tea and a sandwich. They
talked about the cook out and how they were pleased with the results. The
manager said they had three couples waiting to fill the vacancies.
Catherine talked about her family that lived only an hour
away from her. She has three older brothers. They build houses for a living.
Her mother is still living as well. She’s in her own apartment and is in good
health. Her father is living who knows where with whom ever. He had left when
she was fifteen years old.
John told Catherine that he has a father living a couple
hundred miles away. He is a farmer growing avocados. His mother helps out on
the farm. He has a younger brother. John doesn’t care for the farm. So his
younger brother will take over the farm when his dad retires, John likes his
job of social work. He doesn’t have to use his leg too much.
Another week went by before they got together again. He
was still doing therapy on the bike. Catherine wanted to see how he was doing.
The leg seemed to be loosening up a little.
She massaged it and said “I think we can make some
progress here.”
They make a date for him to make spaghetti and meat
balls. He left the salad for her to make, and the garlic bread he could make.
They have a good meal of spaghetti and meat balls. The
sauce was a recipe John had made himself. In his spare time he likes to cook.
When you cook for anyone there is always too much left over.
They got talking about his nephew Ben and said Ben was
wondering about them two. Catherine said she would like him for a friend. He
said he would like her for a friend also. This went on for a few weeks and then
John asked her out to a nice restaurant for a candle light dinner. She wore a
new dress. It was white with large red flowers on it. Hot and short, but still
looked good on her. They had lobster and steak with a huge salad. Everything
went excellent in the food department. John thought he would tell her how he
really felt about her. He was thinking she wouldn’t want him with his gimpy
leg. She says she wants him more than being a friend.
